The School of Agriculture, Research, Extension, and Applied Sciences (AREAS) is excited to announce that it will be launching its new weekly radio talk show titled, “Enriching Lives.” This radio talk show will be the second one produced by the School of AREAS, according to Dr. Freda M. Lawrence, director of media and communications.
The “Enriching Lives” talk show will premiere on Wednesday, June 1 at noon on our campus radio WPRL 91.7 FM, ‘The Gold.’
The “Enriching Lives” talk show will encompass information from all three academic departments of Agriculture, Human Sciences and Advanced Technologies, Center for Biotechnology, Extension Program, and all of the research centers and offices that comprise the School of AREAS.
According to Charles Edmonds, WPRL 91.7 FM operational manager, Department of Mass Communications and the School of AREAS have been working cohesively for two months, to finalize the official details for the new show. The agreement between the radio station and the School of AREAS was signed on April 15.
“Because of the success that we’ve had in the past with the ‘Extension This Week’ show, we felt that a second show with the School of AREAS wouldn’t be a problem,” said Edmonds.
According to Lawrence, the School of AREAS Media and Communications is constantly monitoring how best to inform our small-and-limited-resource farmers and ranchers on the latest services and products available to them. The dissemination of this information is done at numerous venues, including workshops and conferences. In order for our farmers and ranchers to hear about these available products and services, we need the help from all mediums — radio, television, newspaper, and social media — to deliver the information to them.
“Other than radio, to help us further promote and market the School of AREAS, we currently publish a weekly AREAS Now e-publication, produce a yearly magazine titled, Fertile Ground, and have two weekly ‘Extension This Week’ talk shows,” added Lawrence.
The first “Extension This Week” talk show that has been on the air for nearly four years, is hosted by Helen Brooks, marketing specialist, Alcorn Extension Program. It airs weekly on WMIS/WTJY FM/AM on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. The second “Extension This Week” talk show that has been on the air for nearly two years, can be heard every Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. on WPRL 91.7 FM. The show is hosted by Youth Specialist Manola Erby.
“The next initiative I hope to implement in the coming years is a weekly agricultural-based television talk show. My goal is to be able to visually show our targeted audiences how we can further enrich their lives,’ concluded Lawrence.
