The 3rd Annual Centers for Research Excellence Symposium

The School of Agriculture, Research, Extension and Applied Sciences will host its 3rd annual Centers for Research Excellence Symposium, November 10, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Biotechnology Building on the Lorman campus, according to Dr. Davida Crossley, assistant professor biological sciences, and symposium chair.

During the symposium graduate and undergraduate students from Alcorn State as well as surrounding colleges and universities will present their research in a poster or lecture presentation.

The deadline to submit abstracts is Friday, October 7th. Presentation requirements include a poster board 60” width x 42” height. Velcro, double-sided tape and tri-fold boards are not permitted. Oral presentations should not extend 15 minutes which includes discussion time and a PowerPoint.

“The goal of this event is to provide students an opportunity to improve their research communication skills, build resumes, and collaborate with other researchers,” said Crossley. “It is a good opportunity for {our students} to actually practice and to get ready for other conferences, such as, the Mississippi Academy of Sciences in February.”

The symposium was first started by Crossley for students to learn how to deliver oral presentations. The symposium started with only 10 students and has since grown to approximately 60 students annually.

“Basically this research symposium is designed to have a conference setting here at Alcorn, so that the students can present their research and share it to others within the community,” she said.
