Alcorn Honors Students Organization volunteers in Port Gibson
Alcorn State University’s Honors Students Organization spent a day of their weekend giving back to the community.
More than 20 members of the organization, along with Dr. Wandra Arrington, director of the Honors Curriculum Program in the Office of Pre-Professional and Honors Curriculum Programs, traveled to the Christian Volunteers Services Center (Joel’s Place) in Port Gibson, Mississippi Saturday, Feb. 4. The organization provided community service by cleaning the building and making it comfortable for its tenants.
Xavier Bradford, junior and president of the Honors Students Organization, was thrilled about participating in service work.
“It always feels good to come out and help less fortunate individuals in the community,” said Xavier. “I hope that I came make other people feel better through community service.”
Joy Applewhite, a junior psychology major, credits the University’s togetherness as inspiration to reach out to others.
“There has always been a family environment at Alcorn,” said Joy. “Giving back to those around us who are less fortunate is a great thing to do, and it’s our way of embracing them as our own.”
Michael Hearns, senior, biology pre-medicine major, said that blessing others brings him joy.
“It’s great to give back,” said Michael. “Our priority as an organization is to make sure that we go out and be a blessing to others. It’s amazing how helping others can affect their lives in a positive way. It also shows that Alcorn is not only diverse academically, but also in outreach to the community.”
Lois Lockhart, director of the Christian Volunteer Services Center, showed her appreciation to the organization for their selflessness.
“I really appreciated the organization for coming,” said Lockhart. “You all provide wonderful service and I can’t praise you enough for what you do. You all will be blessed tremendously for helping people in Claiborne County.”
