Women in Agriculture “Getting Back to the Basics “ 6-Month Series of Workshops Scheduled
They came from across the state eager to learn more about the Women in Agriculture “Getting Back to the Basics,” introductory workshop. The event, sponsored by the Alcorn State University Extension Program, was held June 17 in the Extension and Complex Building, Lorman campus.
“The primary goal of the workshop was to provide Mississippi landowners and women in agriculture with the basic skills and the necessary tools to help minimize input cost in land management,” said Carolyn L. Banks, ASUEP agricultural business management specialist.
The remaining series of 6 workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Central Mississippi & Extension Center, 1320 Seven Springs Road, Raymond, Mississippi. The dates are:
- July 15
- August 19
- September 16
- October 21
- November 18
- December 16
Attendees were welcomed by Dr. Keith McGee, interim dean and director of land-grant programs, School of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, and chair of Center for Biotechnology. There were numerous presenters including Dr. Franklin Chukwuma, ASUEP interim assistant director; Cassandra Wilder, policy research analyst, Socially Disadvantaged Farmers and Ranchers Policy Research Center, Office of the President, Alcorn State University, and Banks.
Also, Priscilla Williamson, lead district conservationist, United States Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service Field Office, Philadelphia, Mississippi; Esmerelda Dickson, state statistician, Delta Region, Jackson, Mississippi; Valencia Morris, district ranger, Delta National Forest, United States Forest Service, Rolling Fork, Mississippi; Tanya Culbert, lead district conservationist, USDA/Natural Resources Conservation Service, serving Lincoln, Lawrence and Franklin counties, and Michael Trusclair, 1890 program liaison, NRCS, Office of Advocacy and Outreach. Manola Erby, ASUEP youth specialist, presided.
Committee members were Anthony Reed, ASUEP resource development specialist, Helen Brooks, ASUEP agriculture marketing specialist, Chukwuma, Trusclair, Banks, and Erby.
