University College continues reading campaign at Sherman Avenue in Vicksburg in honor of Read Across America Day
Students at Sherman Avenue Elementary School received the joy of reading from some of Alcorn State University’s students and staff members in honor of the annual celebration of reading.
Addie Davis, an academic advisor for University College at Alcorn, participated in the Read Across America Day event at Sherman Avenue Friday, March 1. The celebration was also in honor of Dr. Suess’ 115th birthday. Davis, along with a few students making a surprise appearance, engaged in fun activities that focused on the importance of reading and comprehension.
Davis gave a breakdown of why reading is a tool that students should grasp early in their lives.
“Reading is the foundation of education, and it’s necessary for every aspect of learning,” said Davis. “Reading also opens so many wonderful doors and opportunities to have a more promising and purpose-filled life.”
Davis also expressed how reading is the key to the formation of a student’s vocabulary and problem-solving skills.
“It is important to learn to read because reading increases your vocabulary, your ability to analyze and solve modern life problems, and it allows you to use your imagination to travel the world without leaving the comfort of your home.”
