Alcorn professor wins prestigious Delta Sigma Theta award for community service
Toni Terrett, a mass communications professor at Alcorn State University, was awarded the Social Action Trailblazer award at the 2018 Mississippi Delta Days. Terrett was nominated by the Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, of which she is a member.
The 2018 Mississippi Delta Days was held in Jackson, Mississippi at the King Edward Hotel Monday, Jan. 29 and Sunday, Jan. 30. The purpose of the event was to encourage members of the Southern Region to be more engaged socially and politically in their local communities.
Terrett received the Social Action Trailblazer award because of her engagement in new initiatives that inspire others to do more. Terret expressed her excitement about receiving the award.
“I was very humbled and honored to be recognized by women who I admire and look up to. This award lets me know that my efforts are not in vain,” said Terrett.
Terrett has coordinated workshops and conferences that bring awareness to domestic violence, sex trafficking and personal safety. She has also worked with groups that help prevent homelessness and hunger. Terrett explained her motive for giving back to the community.
“We have all been blessed by those who were selfless enough to make life a little easier for the rest of us. If we reach out and help those in need, future generations will be well-equipped with the tools they need to succeed.”
