University celebrates the legacy of a king
“Salute to Dr. King! Salute to Dr. King! He made the world a much better place.” Dr. Jerry Domatob, professor and interim chair of the Department of Mass Communications, delivered these memorable words in a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at a special program honoring his legacy. Sponsored by Student Activities and the Student Government Association, the University gathered on Tuesday, January 17, in the Oakland Memorial Chapel for an hour of expressions for Dr. King that included recitals of original works by Alcorn students and songs by the ASU Gospel Choir.
SGA President Brandon Christopher Rook spoke to the importance of such an event. “It is imperative that we remember and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” he expressed. “He sacrificed so much towards making the world a better place. I hope that students realize that he was a man of peace and this is something that should be reflected in our lives.” He added, “We have come far as a nation and we should all be very grateful for the blessings and opportunities that we can achieve that our grandparents and others could not.”
At the end of the program, the crowd gathered on the Chapel steps and released white balloons in honor of Dr. King.
