Braves ink signees in basketball, golf and track
Alcorn State, MS—Alcorn State Athletics is pleased to announce signees in the sports of basketball (men and women), track and golf. Men’s basketball signed six (6) players – Joshkema Nicholas, Stephane Raquil, Shantardrick Hester, Devonte Hampton, Clinton Nwosuh and Orlandis Hill will be a part of the Braves squad in the upcoming season.
Of the signees, Head Coach Luther Riley stated that, “Recruiting is the bloodline for any Division I program’s success. The players added will be key contributors to the foundation that we began to lay this past year. We’ve added athletic size, depth and guard play that will make us more competitive in our quest for a championship.”
About the Signees
Joshkema Nicholas is a 7’0 transfer from Wallace State Community College where he led them to a National Junior College Championship. While at Wallace State, Nicholas averaged 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Stephane Raquil, at 6’10, 225 lbs., is also a junior college transfer from Southern Shreveport Community College where he averaged eight points and eight rebounds.
Shantardrick Hester, a 6’8/230 pound newcomer, is a native of Ridgeland, Mississippi, where he attended Ridgeland High School and received All State, All Metro and All District honors.
Devonte Hill is a 6’2 signee from Melrose High School. The Memphis, Tennessee, native captured All State and All Region honors.
Clinton Nwosuh is a Houston, Texas native. The 6’2 hoopster attends Alef Hasting and averaged 28 points in high school. Nwosuh was also ranked in the Top 50 of Hoop Scoop’s online recruiting service.
Orlandis Hill is a 6’1 signee from Atlanta, Georgia. Hill led the state of Georgia in 3 pointers made and 3 point percentage. The Villa Rica High School student averaged 25 points in high school.
Women’s basketball signed Tuscaloosa native, Kiara Harton. Harton is extremely excited to be a part of the Alcorn family. “She is very talented with huge upsize so she will be able to come in and contribute immediately,” expressed Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tonya Edwards.
Harton averaged 17.2 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 blocks a game and was named to All-Tournament Teams for the following events: 2011 Pickens County Invitational, 2011-12 5A Area 6 Tournament, 2011-12 Regional (Elite 8) Championships. Kiara was also the Tournament MVP in the 2011 Falcon Invitational and received 2011-12 All-State Honorable Mention in 5A Girls Division.
Harton led the Central High School Lady Falcons to a 21-8 record during the 2011-2012 season – which was considered “The Best in Two Decades”.
Men’s Golf signed Natchez native, Jonathan Weir to be part of the 2012-13 Golf Team. Weir is a four-year letterman at Natchez High School. At Natchez High School, Jonathan is the president of the student body and a member of the Bulldogs Marching Band. The scholar-athlete scored a 28 on the ACT and carries a 4.1 GPA.
The ASU Track Program has signed seven athletes to add to their 2012-2013 rosters. Darien Hennigton, Darryl Carter, Fred Galloway and Charles Marsaw will participate in the following events: 1500, 5000, 100 meters, Long Jump, High Jump, 200 meters, 400 meters, 1500, 3000m and the steeplechase.
Samantha Banks, Sheray Reese and Catyria Smith will be a part of the 2012-13Lady Braves Track Team. Banks, Reese and Smith will participate in 100 meters, 200 meters, 800, 1500 and 5000 events.
