Relay for Life raises $1000 for American Cancer Society
On October 30, a Mini Relay for Life was hosted on campus by the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated that raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society.
“The Relay participants walked on the track and field to raise awareness and funds that in return will help save lives,” said Event Chair Marcus Griffin, a senior majoring in ag economics at Alcorn.
There were also a number of activities surrounding the walk, such as singing, dancing, and a step show. The walk began at 5:00 p.m. with cancer survivors doing the first lap, and continued till 8:00 p.m.
Griffin added, “We would like to thank everyone who came out to support the event and fight cancer. They also gave donations that are much appreciated!”
Event co-chair Cornelius Williams, a senior majoring in biology/pre-med, stated, “All proceeds will go towards research grants and programs, prevention programs, community/patient support programs, and detection and treatment programs, just to name a few. Hopefully, the money we raised will help save someone’s life!”
Mirenda Griffin, sophomore majoring in agriculture economics, shared, “I came out to participate in the Relay because several members of my family have cancer and I have seen them struggle. I think it’s a great event. It raises cancer awareness and helps people get into healthy life styles.”
Jamie Smith, Financial Aid advisor at Alcorn, said “I really enjoyed the event and came out because I wanted to help fight cancer. Hopefully, the Chapter will make the Relay an annual event.”
