Alcorn’s LSMAMP students, staff says farewell at closing program

Alcorn State University’s Louis Stokes Mississippi Alliance for Minority Participation (LSMAMP) students and staff met one last time to look back on a summer well spent.

Members of Alcorn’s LSMAMP summer camp said their goodbyes at the camp’s 2015 Closing Program Friday, June 19 at the Medgar Wiley Evers Auditorium located in the J.D. Boyd Library. The program is aimed at increasing the quality and quantity of students successfully completing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) baccalaureate degree programs.

The students entertained the audience with musical selections and a step show. Aireyonna James, who participated in the camp and entertainment, expressed how much she enjoyed her summer.

“Our time here has been filled with fun, laughter and a chance to grow and meet new people. It has truly been an honor to attend this program,” said James.

Victoria Williams, also a LSMAMP participant, reminisced about how the group was able to create a solid bond over the course of the camp.

“I had lots of fun. The more we went to choir and step practice, the closer we became. We’re more like a family now. I’m going to really miss everyone,” said Williams.

LSMAMP site coordinator Troy Stewart Sr., who will be retiring this year, said that he has enjoyed years of introducing students to Alcorn and what the school has to offer.

“I’ve had a wonderful time bringing these students to Alcorn with hopes of them furthering their education at this great university. Nobody will nurture these students the way Alcorn can,” said Stewart.
