Marion Stewart earns Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi District VI Scholarship
One of Alcorn State University’s School of Nursing seniors is on the fast track to success with her new scholarship.
Marion Stewart, a Macon, Mississippi native, is this year’s Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi 2017 Scholarship recipient. The Eliza Pillars Registered Nurses of Mississippi is named after Eliza Farish Pillars, the first African-American nurse employed by the Mississippi State Department of Health.
The program is dedicated to excellence in healthcare and supports nurses in the state of Mississippi. Nurses from seven geographical districts in the state make up membership in the organization. District VI consists of the Natchez area.
The scholarship is a motivating factor for Marion. She said that earning the scholarship allows her to focus more on excelling in nursing school.
“It is an honor and privilege to be this year’s scholarship recipient,” said Marion. “I believe the scholarship can benefit me by allowing me to be one step closer to my ultimate goal. The scholarship will also help me to concentrate on my education and not to worry about the price of textbooks or tuition.”
When Marion found out about the scholarship opportunity, she immediately took advantage of. She said that the program’s mission to aid young nurses is what encouraged her to apply.
“After seeing that one of their principles were based upon scholarship and helping student nurses like myself, it inspired me to take the opportunity very seriously.”
Marion said that her future plans include earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2018, gaining experience as a medical surgical nurse and then returning to Alcorn to pursue a master’s degree in nurse education.
