Marquis Warford brings warrior-like intensity to Braves’ lineup
Tenacious, passionate and exceptional are all great ways of describing Alcorn State University Braves’ redshirt junior and newest wide receiver Marquis Warford. Since transferring form the University of Memphis, Warford has excelled at various positions on the gridiron this season.
Warford has racked up six rushing touchdowns, four receiving touchdowns and one touchdown on a kick return against their in-state rival, the Jackson State University Tigers. His all around skills not only helps the Braves ascend to the next level, but it also presents the opportunity for other guys to make game breaking plays.
“Being able to move around helps us a lot as an offense,” said Warford. It gives us a chance to execute different offensive formations that would allow my teammates to get involved. It also helps when I’m on special teams because it gives me the chance to make tackles.”
Those skills proved to be effective in the Braves’ Southwestern Athletic Conference title defense. Warford accounted for 120 rushing yards and a score. He also recorded 58 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the championship win. Warford feels proud to have contributed to a championship winning squad in his first year with the team.
“It’s a humbling experience. I came to Alcorn with high hopes. Being able to contribute to winning a championship in my first year is a dream for me.”
Now that the Braves are preparing to play in the first ever Celebration Bowl, Warford knows that his team is hungry for more success.
“It would mean so much for Alcorn and the SWAC if we can become the first ever winner of the Celebration Bowl. We want to be the first team to win back-to-back SWAC championships and a bowl game. That would be unbelievable.”
