Alcorn’s Jimmie Giles to be inducted into BanCorpSouth Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame
Alcorn’s great athlete Jimmie Giles ’77 will be among the 2013 Class of Inductees into the BanCorpSouth Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame. Giles, one of the greatest tight ends in pro football history, will be inducted during the 51st annual BanCorpSouth Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend that is slated for August 2-3, 2013. All Alcornites are encouraged to support Jimmie at the induction banquet on Friday, August 2, 2013, at the Jackson Hilton Hotel.
Giles was a third-round pick in the 1977 NFL draft. The Greenville, Mississippi, native played 13 professional seasons (1977-89) with four different teams. Drafted by the Houston Oilers, he moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers one year later, where he played for nearly nine seasons (1978-86). During that time, Giles was a four-time Pro Bowl player and helped the Bucs reach the NFC Championship Game during the 1979 season. His best season came in 1981 when he caught 45 passes for 786 yards and six touchdowns. He went on to play with the Detroit Lions (1986-87) and Philadelphia Eagles (1987-89). For his career, Giles caught 350 passes for 5,084 yards and 41 touchdowns.
There will be a reception on Friday night at the Hilton beginning at 5:30 p.m., followed by the banquet at 7:00 p.m. Saturday’s activities include a meet and greet with Hall of Famers (9:30-11:00 a.m.) and the annual Drawdown of Champions sponsored by Wells Moore Simmons & Hubbard and Puckett Machinery. There will also be a silent auction of sports memorabilia and other items.
