Alcorn Extension Program employees housed at USDA service center and USDA NRCS area office
Rachae’ Martin and Joshua Coleman, both Lorman, Mississippi natives, were recently hired as business management training officers for the Alcorn Extension Program, according to Carolyn Banks, interim director, Small Farm Outreach Training and Technical Assistance Project.
Martin and Coleman will provide technical assistance to eligible persons interested in applying for current USDA programs and services offered by Farm Service Agency (FSA), Rural Development (RD), Natural Resources and Conservation Services (NRCS), Risk Management Agency (RMA) and Mississippi Small Farm Development Center (MSFDC).
According to Banks, the Small Farm Outreach Training and Technical Assistance Project continue to work closely with United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) agencies, and a variety of community-based organizations to raise awareness of USDA programs and services, and increase the viability and profitability of socially disadvantage farmers and ranchers.
Technical assistance will be provided to eligible adults interested in FSA, MSFDC, and RD Housing loan programs; youth who want to establish and operate an income producing agriculture-related project of modest size through a FSA youth loan, senior citizens 62 or older interested in a RD Housing loan or grant, and persons interested in applying for NRCS Conservation Practices.
In addition, the Small Farm Outreach Training and Technical Assistance Project staff will continue to provide training workshops and activities on farm and financial management.
Martin received a bachelor of science in environmental biology in 2010 from Alcorn State, where she is currently pursuing a master’s degree in agronomy/environmental science. She is located at the Lincoln County USDA Service Center, in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Mr. Coleman received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics in 2012 from Alcorn State, and will pursue a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Alcorn in January 2013. He is located at the Rankin County USDA NRCS Area Office in Pearl, Mississippi. He will assist persons residing in Rankin, Bolivar, Hinds, Warren, Quitman and other counties as needed.
