Dr. Jennifer Wallace presents at William Carey University
Dr. Jennifer Young Wallace ’91, assistant professor in the Department of Education and Psychology, recently presented during the opening session at the Gulf South Teaching Pedagogy Conference at William Carey University. Dr. Wallace’s presentation “Building Vocabulary: Innovative Ways of Learning New Words”, created a lot of interest among participants. In this hands-on workshop, Dr. Wallace provided the group of college instructors, K-12 teachers, and graduate and undergraduate students with effective strategies and activities that will enhance students’ vocabulary.
Workshop participant Christy Buckley stated in her evaluation of Dr. Wallace’s session that “The workshop gave new ideas on learning vocabulary words and the ways to introduce them to the students.” During this session, participants had to select one word from the short story, find variations of the word and create a word wall from the presentation. “Dr. Jennifer Wallace delivered an exceptional speech on enunciation and how it is our duty to teach our children how to pronounce words correctly. She also shared experiences from her own career that enlightened us,” added Buckley.
Dr. Wallace’s presentation explained to instructors how to help students connect to the words they learn and stressed the need for instructors to employ innovative word lessons in the classroom. “When I connect to the word and can apply it to my life, I am more apt to use that word again and again. K-12 students are no different,” asserts Wallace.
Dr. Wallace had the opportunity to share knowledge with Dr. Tammie Brown, interim dean at William Carey University, and Dr. Betsy Rogers, an instructor at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, and the National Teacher of the Year recipient.
