Andre Payne ’08 ’11 receives national fellowship from Southern Regional Education Board
Alcorn alumna Andre Payne was recently selected as a fellow for Southern Regional Education Board’s competitive State Doctoral Scholars Program and will receive $20,000 per year for up to four years of study. This program is aimed at increasing the number of minority faculty members at universities in the South.
Payne, a native of Mount Olive, Mississippi, holds two degrees from Alcorn State University: a bachelor of science in agricultural economics, and a master of science in agronomy. Her master thesis’ topic was “Plant Density Effect of Vernonia Amygdalina On Growth, Biomass and Mineral Content”. She is currently enrolled as a doctoral student in Mississippi State University’s Department of Plant and Soil Sciences.
“Congratulations to Andre for being selected for this prestigious program, we are so proud of her,” said Payne’s former major advisor, Dr. Patrick Igbokwe, director of the Alcorn Experiment Station and professor of horticulture. “Andre is one of the most academically outstanding students that have graduated from our program. We wish her the best in her future academic endeavors.”
