Alcorn to create Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society chapter
Alcorn State University was recently approved to create a chapter of Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society. Mortar Board is the premier national honor society recognizing college seniors for superior achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.
“It’s an honor and a major achievement for Alcorn to be approved for creating a chapter of this esteemed Society,” stated Dr. Thomas Sturgis, director of Pre-Professional and Honors Curriculum Programs and associate professor of biology at Alcorn. “Only a select few students on each campus are invited to join Mortar Board.”
“Alcorn students now have a unique opportunity to join a diverse group of students from vastly different disciplines and interests,” said Susan Herndon Caples, national president of the Society, during her recent visit to Alcorn. “Since Mortar Board’s founding in 1918, more than a quarter of a million members have held the honor of being initiated at 229 chartered chapters across the nation.”
The Society provides its members with opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community.
The benefits of Mortar Board membership include career and graduate school networking and assistance, opportunities to apply for prestigious scholarships and fellowships, and possibilities participating in prominent internship programs.
