Alcorn receives NCAA recertification
March 01, 2012 –Alcorn State University was among 13 NCAA Division I member institutions that met the requirements for athletics certification announced by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) today. The certified designation means that Alcorn operates its athletics program in compliance with operating principles adopted by the Division I membership in 1993.
Alcorn’s certification confirms our commitment to academic success, athletic development and that our student athletes are champions of character, said President M. Christopher Brown II. “I thank the Alcorn steering committee led by Dr. Peter Malik, associate professor of English, and Dr. John Igwebuike, faculty athletics representative along with athletic personnel, students, faculty and staff,” stated President Brown on how the committee handled the long and thorough process.
The certification process included a self-study under the leadership of the University’s president and included a review of these primary components: governance and commitment to rules compliance; academic integrity; and gender/diversity issues and student athlete well being. Each member institution is to complete a self-study at least once every 10 years.
After Alcorn concluded its self-study, the university hosted an external team of reviewers from peer institutions who conducted a three-dayon campus evaluation. The review team submitted their report to the NCAA Division I Committee in Athletics Certification for Alcorn’s certification status.
The certification process is separate from the NCAA’s enforcement program, which investigates allegations of rules violations by NCAA member institutions. A decision of certified does not exempt an institution from concurrent or subsequent enforcement proceedings.
