Alcorn State, Miss (October 19, 2012) - During the month of October, Alcorn State University held a number of activities aimed at raising awareness on serious illnesses, like breast cancer, other types of cancer and mental illness.
Health and Disability Services and the ASU H.E.R.O.S. sponsored a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk and Literature Table on Wednesday, October 5, 2012, in the Dr. Clinton Bristow Jr. Dining Facility.
For the second installment of Diversity and Inclusion Arts and Lecture Series, on October 9, the Office of Educational Equity and Inclusion brought on campus a speaker on disability issues who was pronounced dead at birth and profoundly affected by cerebral palsy, but has defied all sorts and became a successful speaker and life coach with a dynamic message.
The Division of Student Affairs Counseling and Testing Services gathered representatives of many campus organizations for the Mental Illness Awareness Walk on October 11.
Alcorn Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held a Walk-A-Thon to Stomp out Breast Cancer on Saturday, October 13, that was dedicated to National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
To conclude the eventful month, the Delta Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. invites the Alcorn family to come out and fight cancer during a Mini Relay for Life on October 30, 2012, on the Alcorn track and field between the hours of 3:00 and 8:00p.m. There will be a number of activities surrounding the walk, such as singing, dancing, step show and more. The walk will start at 5:00 p.m. with the survivors doing the first lap, and continue till 8:00 p.m. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.
“We wanted to help fight cancer, and any help we receive may contribute to a cure for this deadly disease,” said Marcus L. Griffin, a senior majoring in ag economics. “We encourage everyone to come out and walk over cancer on Tuesday, October 30.”
